I was a passionate advocate for restoring health care to the 25,000 working poor that were cut under Governor Bob Taft's budget. I have also fought for preventive healthcare and against cuts in optometric and dental coverage because I recognize that it is wise for us to invest a little money into offering patient healthcare today so that Ohioans are not paying significantly more in emergency room visits tomorrow.
Keeping healthcare costs low is just good economics - small businesses are suffering now trying to provide care to their employees. I believe the state has a responsibility to look after the sick and the elderly, the poor and the disabled, and those who cannot look after themselves.
We also must make certain that Ohio’s Medicaid program is fiscally responsible and focusing on patient care; and the Auditor of State must conduct regular audits to ensure that health care provides and the Medicaid program itself are being conducted economically and efficiently.
